Things to do and see in Durham
Visit Crook Hall, which is a glorious Grade 1 listed building, and is in fact a medieval manor house that goes back to the 13th century. It is an extremely popular visitor attraction and is extremely close to the town centre as well making it convenient to reach. The house and its gardens are open to the public and the best time to visit is the summer when cream teas are presented in the courtyard or in the winter when a log fire is set up. Another intriguing feature is the Jacobean room of the house which is thought to be haunted by the niece of a previous resident of the house, and she is referred to as the ‘White Lady’
Durham castle is a great wonder because it has been in use for 900 years straight. It was built to serve as protection from northern tribes after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century and is located just opposite the cathedral. Some renovations and elaborations have been made to the original building but the essentials of the structure remain the same. Guided tours are available to book and last 45 minutes in total.
Another one of Britian’s World Heritage Sites is the Durham Cathedral, which is one of the greatest Norman buildings of the country and has also been voted as the best-loved building in a poll in 2001. all visitors enjoy the magnificent architecture of it as well the history it contains and its religious symbolism also.
An interesting location is Fowler’s Yard Creative Workspaces, which is basically some stables close to the River Wear which have been turned around into workspaces where the works of local artists are displayed for all to see. It is possible to watch a lot of this artwork in the making, whether it be woodcarving, glasswork, painting or textiles.
.
Visit the Durham Heritage Centre, which is colourful museum based on the history of the city. It has been set up in a medieval church, where the displays speak of the story of the city right to the present day. Some of the items are very peculiar indeed, such as the ‘death chair’ in which schoolboys were carried to the infirmary in cases of illness. An audio-visual show is also a part of the experience.
